It was founded in 1999 from the Abbey of Our Lady of Fontgombault in France and is located in the Diocese of Tulsa, Oklahoma. While these 1,458 entries are composed from a distinctly 18th-century Catholic perspective, Alban’s syntheses of multitudinous histories result in an enlightenment of the ecclesiastical side of Western cultural development, with particular emphasis on the early Christian era. Parishes, schools, and libraries will find Butler's Lives of the Saints an invaluable reference work. A compilation and condensation of the full work of Butler and his lives of the saints of the Catholic Church. It was at Douai that he began his principal work The Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs and Other Principal Saints.

The work of an English layman, Donald Attwater, added more saints, which brought the total to 2,565, compared to the original 1,486. Written in the early 19th Century by Alban Butler, and English convert to Catholicism, this twelve volume collection was a collection of the stories of the lives of all the Saints that existed at that time. May contain markings such as bookplates, stamps, limited notes and highlighting, or a few light stains. Reading about a saint each day (most days) made it manageable and exposed me to saints I had known about by name only or never even heard of.

This is hardly Butler's work at all - this text has been raped clean of all the author's intent, and is filled with sophistries and outright lies. These Christians were missionaries to the pagans who lived in what is now modern Europe, they founded churches, monasteries and convents, and performed miracles.

I must admit that my review is based on the on-line version, so I cannot vouch for this particular edition. But considering that 20th Century Popes have created more Saints than the Popes of all previous centuries combined, this work is desperately in need of updating.
